In 1992, AnimeCon became Anime Expo, and the non-profit, Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation was founded. Although the first Anime Expo was officially in 1992, we’ve always counted 1991 as our first year and celebrated our milestones accordingly.

While 2016 does mark our 25th show; we are so excited about this monumental milestone, that we plan to extend our celebration through 2017 for our *official* 25th anniversary~!

Though we’re still in the planning stages, we’re aiming for the next two years to be full of big events and exciting guests. Plus, over the next few months, we’ll be sharing some tidbits about the history of AX and inviting attendees to share their own memories and experiences of Anime Expo.

If you have any photos, stories, videos, or memorabilia that you’d like to share with us (especially from 1991 – early 2000’s), please feel free to reach out to us by sending an email to marketing@spja.org!
