Best Mechanical Kit
Any non modified (out of box build) mecha subject from any anime/game series such as Gundam, Macross, Five Star Stories, Armored Core, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Zoids, Eureka seveN, MaK, etc. Any scale is allowed. Any scale: 1/100, 1/144, 1/60, 1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc. Any custom paint scheme or custom decals are also allowed.

Best Mechanical Custom
Any mechanical kit that has been modified from its form out of the box. This includes kit bashes (taking different kits and combining them to create a single kit), full scratch builds, modifications in cosmetics - such as using putty to reshape areas of the model, adding electronics such as lights/sounds, adding after markets items such as mesh, fuel tanks, metal beads, altering joints to make the kit more mobile or posed in a special way, etc.

Best Character Kit
Any non mechanical kit from any anime series in any scale. Kit cannot be a robot, or interpreted as a robot (Mecha); however noted exceptions are very humanistic cyborgs such as Motoko from Ghost in the Shell. Nudity is not allowed and must be covered appropriately.

Best Character Custom
Any figure kit that has been modified, fully scratch built, or a kit bash. Modifications can include repositioning of the appendages, cosmetic surgeries to enhance or change the appearance of the original kit.

Best of Show
This will be awarded to the best entry amongst all the categories, the best of the best.

Rules

  1. Competitor must have a valid Anime Expo® registration for the day of the competition.
  2. All work submitted must be his/her own work.
  3. An entry into the modeling competition cannot be listed as for sale in Art Show.
  4. All kits must adhere to the "family friendly" con experience (no explicit scenes - think "rated PG-13").
  5. All kits are expected to be painted.

Judging Criteria

Presentation25 pts – This is how the kit is displayed for judging. This includes: Base, pose, and a non-technical look at the piece which is a 2ft judgment of the piece. A 2ft judgment is at a distance how does the piece look. A piece can look incredible at 2ft but be technically flawed at close inspection. This is also any custom painting, decals, or other items that are added to the kit to add to the appearance of the piece away from its technical merits.

Finish15 pts – This is a careful inspection of the actual painting, decals, weathering. Items to be judged: excessive brush strokes, over spray, decals that are peeling or silvering, stickers (if used) not showing signs of peeling or abuse. Sticker abuse is the sticker showing signs of being removed and reapplied and/or having creases and various other signs of poor care.

Construction20 pts – This is the actual skill used in building the piece. This is visible seams, correcting of flaws in the kit, filling open areas that should be solid. This is general issues with how the kit was assembled. Some additional issues covered here are custom modifications done to the kit to make it better (Lighting, new jointing, correcting joint issues, addition of conversion kit parts).

Total Points: 60
