The Annex

Discover something new, something edgy, something fun and exciting.

The Annex is a new concept space located in Kentia Hall, adjacent to Artist Alley. Established in 2018, The Annex serves as a space to showcase creators' designs alongside fashion brands from Japan, curated to feature only the most cutting-edge fashion and art. Additionally, The Annex includes live art, portfolio reviews, Art Show, Archive, Charity Auction displays, Kids Zone, an attendee lounge area, a lounge area for Artist Alley participants and exhibitors, and a few other one-of-a-kind experiences you won't find anywhere else.

Featured Artists

Throughout the weekend, our talented artists will be onsite creating largescale, unique art pieces which will go towards our annual Charity Auction. They will also be doing live screenprinting of their original artwork, so you have the chance to bring home one of their exclusive designs.

Jared Yamahata

Jared Yamahata is an artist and illustrator living in Pasadena. Jared often uses pop culture references and graphic design to create fun and witty images. His style has allowed him the privilege to work with such as brands as FOX Sports and FORBES Spain. In addition to freelance illustration, Jared also loves participating in local communities and organizations to develop public artwork, most recently Sustainable Little Tokyo's "Windows of Little Tokyo" and Nisei Week. Anime Expo 2019 is Jared's first year working with the convention and he is very excited to share the community's passion for anime.

Shinnosuke Uchida

When self-taught artist Shinnosuke Uchida first presented her work to her favorite manga publisher, they rejected her retro style. Though broken-hearted, not only didn't she give up, she went big by becoming the world's only wall-manga live paint artist. Since then she has been invited outside Japan to live paint in Spain, Russia, Italy, Germany and now for the first time in the U.S. at Anime Expo. In partnership with Tokyo Direct (Japanese pop artist collaborators), Uchida will live paint and sell her original T-shirts, designs and other goods.

Portfolio Sessions

Anime Expo is once again proud to provide aspiring artists with a venue to gather, learn, and gain feedback on their artwork from industry professionals as it is important that artists have a friendly, encouraging environment with which to enjoy all aspects of anime. These Portfolio Review sessions are strictly to help provide feedback and guidance to the next generation of anime artists. These reviews are free of charge with no obligation from either side to move forward with a business relationship.

Guidelines:

  • Each session must be completed within 15 minutes.
  • Bring a physical portfolio. Power and Internet will not be provided onsite.
