All right, as it turns out, I will not be able to use my own equipment, which means no PBR stations

AX Staff Moderator TerrenceT says concerning hooking up your own consoles:

Quote

Not gonna happen. End of story. No room in expo allows attendees to plug in their own hardware such as TV or consoles.

If I was familiar with the convention area, I might try anyway, but this year AX is at the LA Convention Center and I honestly don't know what to expect. But not to worry. I will still be hosting a tournament. Unfortunately it will have to be DS-to-DS and we won't have auto-leveling. This will probably cut the amount of players that want to enter. Maybe I should make the tournament 32 people...

Another issue. Apparently, there will not be enough space in any single room for me to invite persons to a tournament that is not run my the AX staff.

BUT...

The great thing about a video game tournament played over portable Nintendo DS games is that we don't need everyone to congregate in one area. What we will do is this. Persons who want to be in the tournament will meet me outside the game room. I will register them in, and then pair them off with their opponents. From there, they can play their matches wherever they please. They need only return to me after their match to report their win or loss. Then I'll pair them up with another opponent for their next round match.

So I guess this will be a convention-wide tournament, heh.

There seems to be a lack of interest in this year's tournament. Perhaps it's because of the lack of a room to hold it in, no auto-leveling, or lack of maybe people have just lost interest in Pokemon in general. But because of the lack of interest, I fear there will not be many people at the tournament. And it's not really worth me shelling out money for a prize when not a lot of people are going to be there.

So, unless there are any complaints, there will be no prize. This will just be a competition to see who's the best.

Apparently, some people feel that it is unfair to ban players that use an AR if their pokemon have legitimate stats/movesets. I don't understand how banning people for using an AR is ridiculous since that is how official Nintendo tournaments are run.

But, anyway, I put on these tournaments because I want people to have fun. If that's the goal, then I guess I should get rid of a rule that would isolate much of the fanbase. I guess I have to swallow my pride and forego that particular rule.

Just wanted to let you know I'll be there. I'm not used to being able to use more than one of the same item, but I'll adjust. Funny, I made an account just to let you know you're not alone on here.

Hi there.

I'm not able to make it to AX this year, and it's probably too late to get people interested for this tournament anyway, but here's some suggestions for next time around:

-Instead of doing open level, if you have to play offline, make it so there are level limits. One could be up to level 100, one could be up to level 50, and if you're feeling like it, you could have a baby tournament that's only level 5.

-Go ahead and ban pokemon that you think are AR-generated, but only if you can prove it. Websites like Smogon and Serebii list all the pokemon's Minimum and Maximum stats, with the Maximum being perfect 31 IVs, EV trained to the max. If it exceeds that, it's a cheated pokemon. If it doesn't, then it's really not worth pursuing the person, since, while a pokemon with perfect IVs naturally is very rare, it's still possible to do. If you can, have a laptop handy so you can look up anything that seems fishy.

-Don't forget to ban Wynaut.

As for prizes, I'd have something in mind for this year just in case, even if it's something small, like a pokemon toy you bought in the dealer area.

The date on the rules post said that the tournament was on Friday. It is not on Friday, it is on Saturday, so I edited that post. Registration for the tournament starts at 11 on Saturday.

New Policy on Hacking

In this age of Pokemon, I would be a fool not to recognize the prominence of hacking. As much as I dislike it, it is a standard fixture in the metagame. As much I would like to remove it, my actions alone will not make much of a difference.

To ban hackers would be to ban a majority of the community. This would be counterproductive to my plan of getting a lot of people at my tournament. But I cannot shake the feeling that it would be unfair for a traditional trainer to lose to an outright hacker.

And so, I am instating a new policy. At the tournament, the community will be responsible for dealing with hackers. If a trainer suspects a player is hacking, he may report it to the tournament director (myself). The tournament director will check for signs of hacking in the accused trainer's team of pokemon. If the tournament director finds hacking, he has the option of prohibiting the hacked pokemon or banning the player.

To prevent trainers from manipulating this policy to gain an unfair advantage in the tournament, I have created several countermeasures. After the accused trainer's team is checked for hacked pokemon, the accuser's team will be checked for hacked pokemon. The tournament director will take the same action against the accuser if hacked pokemon are found in his team. This will prevent hackers going up the bracket by calling each other out.

And there is one more countermeasure to make sure this policy is not abused. If the tournament director is unable to find any signs of hacking in the accused trainer's team, the accuser must forfeit the match as a way of apology. This will discourage players from accusing each other unless they are absolutely sure the opponent is hacking. The popular notion is that if you can't tell if the opponent is hacking, then he clearly must not have an unfair advantage. In which case it would be unfair to ban that player from the tournament. This also checks a traditional trainer's ability to accuse opponents of hacking without any repercussion.

There's the new policy. It was the most reasonable system I could come up with.

I've only seen ONE person playing Pokemon in the console room. I'm always down for just some casual matches.
