  • Anime Podcasting for Beginners

    Podcasting — releasing digital media files episodically for download through web syndication – is an exciting new medium that is being used by many people to broadcast their passion. There is still a lack of good anime, manga, Japan-related podcasts compared to other genres, and I would like to do something about this by educating the anime fan base on podcasting. In my workshop I’ll demonstrate the tools that I use, and will show that producing a high-quality anime podcast is both easy and affordable. There will also have some time at the end for Q&A.

This is the story of the wave itself, the trends it set in the nations it held sway over, and predictions on where the cultural wave is headed next.

  • Convention Photography 101: How To Get The Shot (and make it look easy!)

    High quality digital cameras are so cheap and easy to use that just about everybody has them. Unfortunately that ease-of-use can be misleading, and the fact is that the typical convention environment does present some challenges, in terms of properly lighting your subjects, good locations to take your photos, etc. But the challenges are certainly not insurmountable, and armed with some of the same tips and tricks that the pros use, and the right gear, anyone can get really good results in even the most difficult situations. We’ll demonstrate these tricks and how to put them to good use.

  • Etching Metal for Cosplay and Models

    Prof. Damien Tremens, Proprietor of the Tinker’s Toolbox

    The panel will show the process from start to finish of etching a design into metal, as well as some basic finishing techniques. The process, using a simple salt water bath and regular batteries, allows one to etch metals such as brass, copper, nickel silver, bronze, and steel. Each step will be shown via photos, video, and live demonstrations. A question and answer session will follow the demonstration. All of the materials used in the demonstration will be listed, and are safe to use, commonly available, and inexpensive.

The direction of the discussion is driven by the audience as questions are taken throughout the panel. Also, since I will be speaking openly about sex and sexuality, this panel needs to be 18+ only.

  • The Future of OEL Manga and Creating Manga In Universities

    What is the future of OEL (Original Language Manga)? Experts exhibit fresh new OEL manga as they discuss how OEL can make the next step up in the USA and world markets. There have been missteps, but developments in personalizing the form, technology as well as the involvement of art schools may lead to a sunny future.

    Questions: how can the US creators develop their art and craft and then reach out to the world. The role of new technology (IPAD, internet) will be stressed as will the current lack of proper editorial support. The Japanese model will be examined for clues. Q and A to follow.

    We will begin with a montage of past episodes and characters played on the video monitors. Several guests will then walk on the panel and as the host begins the introductions a second video will play with the Psychotaku interrupting. The Psychotaku will then reveal himself and walk through the crowd as he makes his way to the podium. From there the panel will hold a Q and A until 10 minutes before the end of the panel. At which time a new never before seen episode will be unveiled.

    This panel/workshop will focus on the ins and outs of voice-acting, with extra attention on what an agent/producer looks for in a voice actor, the kind of work available in the industry, how location plays into voice acting and more. We will be filming the skits prior to the convention and playing them in the panel on the projector. The themes will be anime/manga, video games, comic books, cosplay, Japanese culture and convention life. We will also be performing improv comedy routines in between the skits we play.
