Basic Requirements
Artists who wish to participate in the Artist Alley must:
• Register for a four-day membership to Anime Expo® 2008
• Register for a table in the Artist Alley
• Obtain a valid California Seller’s Permit
• Agree and comply with the Anime Expo 2008® Code of Conduct and Artist Alley Contract.
Set-Up
Tables are 3’x6’. Two chairs will be provided for each table. The tables will not be draped. Tables will be arranged into long “islands,” with artists on the inside of the island and attendee traffic on the outside.
There may be no more than two artists or helpers behind a table at any time. All helpers and artists must receive a sticker from the Art Department staff at check-in. (Only four stickers will be distributed per table.)
The tables may not be moved in any way. Artists are welcome to bring their own drapes and displays, but nothing may encroach on other artists’ space or block the island’s exits.
Artist placement is assigned. Special requests for location or special set-ups may be made (i.e., “I want to sit next to my friend, John Doe” and “I’d like a space where I could have a certain amount of stationary traffic for portrait work”), but the Art Department cannot guarantee all requests will be met.
Power outlets may or may not be available. If you would like to request the use of a power outlet, please contact the Art Department as soon as possible.
Price
Due to the Artist Alley’s increased size and associated costs, table prices have increased to match. The price of one Artist Alley table for the entirety of Anime Expo® 2008 is $70.

Registration
February 4, 2008: Registration went up at 5:30AM 6:15AM this morning. Tables were SOLD OUT in less than five minutes! Currently the staff is looking into adding tables and re-opening registration within the next month. Please continue to check back here and at the Artist Info forums for more information.
Registration for the Artist Alley can be completed through Anime Expo®’s Registration Site. You must purchase a four-day membership in order to register for Artist Alley. Industry artists or artists with special circumstances regarding registration should contact the Art Department as soon as possible.
Group Registration
Larger groups composed of more than 2-3 artists may wish to register for more than one table. A group representative may now register for up to four tables. (Groups that wish to have more than four tables should contact the Art Department as soon as possible.)
Group registration follows the same process as regular registration. However, groups MUST provide information for at least one artist per purchased table. Groups must additionally provide a statement of purpose and/or website URL. (An example of a statement of purpose: “[Group] was formed by a community of artists who came together on an online forum. We plan to promote our comic anthology and its participating artists.”)
A group needs at least one California Seller’s Permit (under the name of the primary artist and/or group). Each table should be occupied by at least one artist throughout the convention.
Abuse of the group registration system (buying extra tables for display only, any attempt to resell tables, etc.) will result in the involved artists being blacklisted from Anime Expo®.
Primary Artists, Secondary Artists, and Helpers
The “primary artist” is the individual who purchases the table(s) through the Anime Expo® Registration Site. The primary artist must be present at check-in to claim their table(s).
The primary artist must be present at the check-in of all secondary artists and helpers. Registered artists and helpers will receive special Artist Alley stickers to place on their convention badges.
Only four artists/helpers may be registered per table. (For example: the primary artist, two secondary artists and one helper make four.) Please remember that only two people may be behind a table at a time.
Attendees without stickers should not be behind a table at any time.
Underage Artists
Artists born after July 3rd, 1990 must provide the name and phone number of a legal guardian when registering. Additionally, a signed copy of the legal guardian’s photo ID must be provided upon check-in.
The named legal guardian must provide the California Seller’s Permit and claim responsibility for the underage artist.
California Seller’s Permit
Per California law, all artists selling artwork/items at the Artist Alley must obtain a California seller’s permit valid for the period of Anime Expo® 2008. A copy of the permit must be presented to the Artist Alley staff upon check-in.
Completing the Application Form
You can find the appropriate forms at the California Board of Equalization.
Artists should apply for a temporary seller’s permit. Please complete the application form carefully—empty fields or vague information may result in the application being sent back to you. We recommend that artists apply for their permit as soon as possible, and no later than one month before the convention.
If you have any questions, please visit the Artist Info forum, contact the Art Department, or contact the BOE through their website or call center.

The sale of videotapes, DVDs, model kits, manga/comic books, production cels, or other commercially produced items of any type is prohibited in Artist Alley. Blatantly copied or traced artwork, handicrafts made from pre-existing/published patterns, artwork or merchandise featuring official logos/mascots and other instances of plagiarism will result in a warning and may lead to expulsion from Artist Alley.
Mass Production
Mass production is strictly forbidden. Artist Alley is a venue to help amateur and young professional artists promote and sell their original artwork. If you plan to sell items in the thousands, you belong in the Exhibit Hall.Artist Alley follows the rule of 200/100/50:
Doujinshi/Fancomics – A limit of 200 doujinshi/fancomics per day.
Buttons – A limit of 200 buttons per style per day.
Prints – A limit of 200 prints per artwork per day.
Stickers – A limit of 100 stickers per day.
Keychains – A limit of 100 per style per day.

Any other items not listed are limited to 50 items per day.The Art Department staff will not be strictly monitoring the number of items every artist sells per day. We ask that artists and groups be considerate to their peers, and refrain from abusing the spirit of Artist Alley.
Adult Material
Artwork deemed inappropriate for children must be kept behind the table and out of view. Artists may have a sign indicating that adult material is available upon request. Adult material must not be accessible to minors at any time. Please check ID!
Traffic/Space Control
In the interest of making Artist Alley a pleasant and safe experience for everyone, we ask that all artists keep on eye on the traffic in front of their table. At least one member of the Art Department staff will be available during regular Alley hours to help with traffic. If you have concerns about the amount of traffic your table may receive during the convention, please contact the Art Department staff as soon as possible.
During regular Artist Alley hours, having a chair in front or to the side of a table is strictly prohibited. There should be nothing in front of your table. If you require a special set-up, contact the Art Department as soon as possible.
Artists should always be mindful of the space they occupy. Do not put up displays that encroach upon another artist’s space unless you have their express permission. Do not bring more merchandise than you can fit under your table and chairs. Entryways to the table islands must be kept clear at all times.
The Golden Rule(s)
Treat other artists as you would have them treat you!
Please be mindful of your space, traffic and noise level. Any music or ambient noise must be kept low. If an artist, attendee or the Art Department staff requests that the noise level be brought down or removed entirely, please do so immediately. Keep in mind that you’ll be sharing the same space with hundreds of artists for four days. Be considerate to your fellow artists, and help make Artist Alley an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Warning System
Warnings will be issued to artists who fail to observe the Artist Alley contract and the rules listed above. The Art Department will follow the three strikes system: two warnings will be issued. Upon receiving a third warning, the artist or group (and associated secondary artists/helpers) will be asked to leave the Artist Alley. Depending on the severity of the problem, individuals or groups may be blacklisted from future Anime Expo® conventions and/or Artist Alleys.
Please keep in mind that the warning system applies to tables and groups. If an individual at a table or in a group receives three warnings, the individual’s group and associated artists/helpers will also be expelled from Artist Alley.
Check-In
Check-in will begin at 8:00am on the first day of Anime Expo® 2008. Because tables are assigned, there will not be any need for artists to line up beforehand.
Items required at check-in: The primary axrtist must present their Anime Expo® 2008 convention badge, photo ID and a copy (not the original or number) of their California seller’s permit. Minors must additionally provide a signed copy of their legal guardian’s photo ID.
