The AX Maid Cafe and AX Butler Cafe are now accepting applications for AX 2018 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. If you are interested in being an AX Volunteer, please read through the requirements below prior to submitting your application. Thank you.

Deadline to apply is March 1st, 2018. There will not be multiple application cycles, so be sure to apply before the deadline.

It is encouraged to complete as much of your Shiftboard profile as possible to better your chances of being selected.

What is AX Maid Cafe?

Evolved from the concept of cosplay restaurants, our Maid Cafe event will feature volunteers dressed up in maid costumes. Our maids will provide an array of entertainment for their Goshujin-sama (Masters) to enjoy, such as interactive games, group dances, musical performances, photo ops, etc. If you’re interested in customer services, cosplay or moe (cute) culture, this would be a fun experience. The Maid Cafe also showcases an 18+ themed show during the evenings of Anime Expo.

What is the AX Butler Cafe?

Just like the AX Maid Cafe, our butlers will feature volunteers dressed up in butler uniforms and provide an array of entertainment for the Ojou-sama (Mistresses). There will be dance performances, musical performances, photo ops, and an interaction period where you can play games at your table with guests. If you’ve ever watch Ouran High School Host Club, then you’ll know what to expect. The Butler Cafe also showcases an 18+ themed show during the evenings of Anime Expo.

AX Volunteer Requirements:

  • Must live in Southern California.
  • Must have reliable transportation to attend rehearsal and training sessions in Santa Ana.
  • Must have a regularly checked email address or Facebook
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by January 14th 2018 to attend and participate in any rehearsals.
  • Must be in good health to be on your feet for up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Must be able to attend at least 70% of Sunday meeting/training dates located in Santa Ana.
  • Must be friendly, work well with others, and enthusiastic.
  • Must be comfortable to converse with strangers.
  • Must have a government issued ID in order to complete a background check

*Disclaimer: Volunteers may still participate as a Maid or Butler without being a part of the stage performance.

Dancer Requirements:

  • Must attend the following audition for respective show:
    • Maid Café Dance Audition Dates/Times
    • All Ages Dance Group: Jan. 14th 10 am – 12 pm
    • 18+ Dance Group: Jan. 14th 12 pm – 2 pm
  • Butler Café Dance & Band Audition Dates/Time
    • Dance Group: Jan. 14th 10 am – 12 pm
    • Butler Band: Jan. 14th 12 pm – 2 pm

*Applying Maids: please bring character shoes or heels to dance audition

  • Must meet all requirements listed in “AX Volunteer Requirements”.
  • Must be able to attend 70% of Sunday dance rehearsal dates located in Santa Ana.
  • Must participate in rehearsals in comfortable clothes.

How to Apply for Maid or Butler Café

  1. Apply to be a volunteer at http://bit.ly/SPJAapp, if you have not already.
    • Remember to fill out as much of the application as you can.
  2. Within 3 days you will receive an acceptance letter from Shiftboard.
    • Note: The acceptance letter will have your login and temporary password.
  3. Go to https://www.shiftboard.com/SPJA/.
  4. Log in using your email address and password.
  5. Go to your name shown in the upper right corner. A dropdown menu will appear.
  6. Click “MyAccount”

Audition Video Requirements

  • Technical requirements
  • Must be a YouTube link or Dropbox link
  • Video must be 2 minutes max
  • Must be at least 480p
  • Please record yourself in a well-lit area
  • No filters and no obstruction of your face or body
  • Voice must be audible
  • Remember to smile and be polite J
