AX Volunteer Program FAQ

  • How do I apply to be a volunteer for Anime Expo?
    • Volunteer applications for new volunteers to join the AX Volunteer Program are open for a limited window. Volunteer applications will be open from mid-January to mid-February for 3 weeks. If you miss the application deadline, please be sure you are subscribed to the Anime Expo email newsletter for information should applications reopen in the future.

  • I volunteered/applied to be a volunteer previously, do I need to redo my Shiftboard profile?
    • No, if you previously volunteered or applied, your Shiftboard account will already exist and thus you should be able to log in to access your account on shiftboard.com/spja. If you are unable to log in, please feel free to reach out to Volunteer Resources at vr@spja.org.

  • How will I know if I have been selected as an AX Volunteer?
    • Volunteer recruitment is finalized by early April prior to the event. If you have not been contacted directly by Volunteer Resources by this time, please know we have moved forward with other candidates and will keep your profile on file for the future.

  • I would like to update my volunteer department preference! How can I update this?
    • You may reach out to VR at vr@spja.org and inform us of your updated department preference based on the most current list of available departments offered in the AX Volunteer Program. You may check out the Volunteer Department List here.

  • Can I volunteer for multiple departments?
    • No, you can only volunteer for one department during the Anime Expo event.

  • How many hours should I expect to dedicate to the AX Volunteer Program?
    • If selected as an AX Volunteer, please expect to dedicate a minimum of 40 hours to your volunteer work while onsite at Anime Expo. Volunteers should expect to be available from Day 1 – Day 4 of the event. Please note, some departments may require earlier availability as required volunteer duties may begin up to three days prior to the event.

  • What could I expect my workload to be like as an AX Volunteer?
    • Each department operates differently. As such, we recommend you review the Volunteer Department descriptions for more information. At minimum, we encourage you to be prepared for a lot of walking due to the size of the AX Campus. All departments differ in their required schedule with their shift start and end times. You should expect to be able to work independently on a task as well as working well in a team.

  • Are meals provided for AX Volunteers?
    • Yes! AX Volunteers are provided free meals throughout the duration of the event. Hours of Operation and location will be provided closer to the event date from Volunteer Resources.

  • Will outside food be permitted into the Los Angeles Convention Center?
    • Food and beverages are permitted for personal consumption only. This means only food and beverages that you would be able to consume individually are allowed. Food and beverages brought in bulk will not be permitted into the convention center. We highly recommend bringing a refillable water bottle. There are several water stations throughout the convention center. We want to make sure you stay hydrated during the day. All consumables are subject to inspection by LACC/AX Security.

  • What are some perks for being a confirmed AX Volunteer?
    • As a confirmed AX Volunteer, you can expect exclusive swag available only to volunteers! You will receive your own AX Volunteer credential as well as a complimentary Anime Expo General Attendee credential to provide to a friend or family member for the current year’s event. Volunteers are offered free meals throughout the event, and based on availability, are offered housing and parking at a local university.

  • I volunteered previously for the Attendee Volunteer Program! Is it available this year?
    • Effective 2022, the Attendee Volunteer Program has been discontinued.

  • I don’t live in the United States, am I still eligible to volunteer?
    • Effective 2023, we are no longer accepting international volunteers for our events.
